Ruby and The Vines

Recently tipped by Max Reinhardt as " Wild, Hot and about to happen new trio" from SOAS, London, don't miss the amazing funky sounds of this new band, who recently opened the bill for Grammy Award winner Dobet Gnahore at Rich Mix.

"Ruby and The Vines" led by Binisa Bonner (Bass|Vocals), fuse influences as diverse as Afro-Rock, Congolese roots music, Soul-Jazz, Funky beats, Dub and Reggae. The line-up is completed by Greg Sanders (Guitar|Vocals) and Ben Assiter (Drums), who complement Binisa’s soulful, jazzy vocals and deftly melodic bass lines with a meticulous groove.

Binisa comes from a mixed English/Congolese background and grew up in multicultural Brixton, London. As a singer - with vocal training in jazz, pop and South African singing - she has a distinctive approach to songwriting with compositions originating from melodic use of the bass. The name "Binisa" means "one that makes people dance" in Lingala (a Congolese language), and she is blessed with an amazingly fresh voice that will surely set the music scene alight for years to come.

Ben and Greg, both also Londoners, have backgrounds in many different styles of music from funk and ska through to hip-hop, jazz, etc, and are exquisite musicians in their own right.

The band play an irrestitable fusion of funky beats with spanking guitar-riffs that Jimi Hendrix would be proud of; and a pulsating drum rhythm to match. They come to perform Upstairs at The Ritzy - "straight-off-the-boat" - as some would say, from a Summer music excursion to the West African music heartlands of Senegal, Gambia and Mali.
