Mali Latino Album

Pianist, arranger, composer and band leader Alex Wilson and Malian kora master Madou Sidiki Diabaté present Mali Latino.  They head up a sensational nine-piece band (including trumpet, trombone and full Latin percussion section), with Malian percussion virtuoso Ahmed Fofana in this cross-cultural music adventure. A rich mix of Latin dance patterns and driving West African rhythms make for a spectacular evening at Brighton Dome’s Corn Exchange on 2 November at 8pm.

Born out of an earlier encounter for the 2004 track Remercier les travailleurs and an Aldeburgh Music Composer residency, Mali Latino is a rare moment of musical alchemy: a collision of two distinct styles and traditions that a unique sound with fiery Latin percussion, mixed with the driving rhythms of Mali, the virtuosic kora and piano of Madou and Wilson’s intense combination of mandingue and Cuban vocals.

As a composer, arranger, performer and educator, Alex Wilson is one of the UK’s foremost Latin music producers. He has travelled over fifty countries to perform music in a multitude of projects, including writing a theatre score for NITRO (Britain’s leading black theatre company), commissions from the Royal Opera House, the Royal Northern College of Music and the Society for the Promotion of New Music, and a guest appearance with Wynton Marsalis’ Jazz at the Lincoln Centre Orchestra at the London Barbican Concert Hall.

The new album collaboration between Alex Wilson, Madou Sidiki Diabate and Ahmed Fofana is now available from Amazon on pre-order:
